Code Export
Also known as: export to HTML, code download
Downloading a site built on a hosted platform as files, which is rarely the same thing as a site that still works.
Several hosted platforms offer an export. You press a button and get a folder. It feels like portability.
Read what is in the folder. A set of static pages usually travels fine. Anything the platform was doing while a visitor was on the page does not, because that part was never in the folder.
The question to ask is not whether an export exists. It is whether the exported thing serves visitors tomorrow morning without you paying anyone.
For a brochure site the answer is often yes. For a site with a content system or a store behind it, an export is a head start on a rebuild rather than a move.
