What You Own
The difference between a license and a lease.
If you stop paying a platform company next month, how much of your work still exists? That one question sorts every option on the market, and almost nobody asks it before signing up.
A plain picture
Renting a kitchen versus owning the recipes
Imagine you cook for a living. One deal gives you a kitchen by the month. Lovely equipment, somebody else fixes the oven, and the day you stop paying you cannot cook at all.
The other deal sells you the recipes and the method. You still have to find a kitchen. But the recipes are yours forever, they work in any kitchen, and nobody can raise your rent on them.
Neither deal is wrong. They are just different businesses, and the one you pick decides what you are worth in five years.
Ask before you sign
Three questions that tell you what you are buying
- If I stop paying, what still runs? Not what exports. What actually keeps serving visitors tomorrow morning without me paying anyone.
- Whose account are my client sites in? If they are in yours, every client is a hostage. If they are in the platform's, you are the one being held.
- Does my cost grow with every site I keep? A fee per site is a tax on your own success. Twenty happy clients should not make your month harder.
Write down what each platform says. Then read it back as though a client just asked you the same question about their website, because eventually one will.
The honest list
What you own here, and what you do not
| Thing | Yours? | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| The installed system | Yes | Runs on your server. Keeps running whether or not you renew anything. |
| Every site you build with it | Yes | Plain files. Copy them, move them, hand them to a client. |
| Your client content and data | Yes | Readable files and your own warehouse, not a locked account. |
| Future updates to the system | While subscribed | What you already have keeps working. New work arrives while you are current. |
| Support and build help | While subscribed | This is the part you are actually paying monthly for. |
| The AI Website Systems name | No | You sell under your own brand. The trademark stays with us. |
| Hosting and a domain | No | Your cost, your choice of host. That freedom is the point. |
Two rows there say "while subscribed" and we are not going to bury them. Stopping payment does not switch your sites off. It stops the new work and the help arriving. That is the deal, stated once, in the open.

The directory records how every platform we track handles these same three questions, in the same words, so you are not translating marketing copy in your head.
